Closet Storage
To many, the term closet storage is an oxymoron. Storage in a closet? Who’s kidding who? In many households, closets are chock full of everything but the kitchen sink. In homes or apartments with small closets, it’s a necessity to become creative in coming up with solutions for getting the most out of the closet storage space that is available. This generally means having to store more than just clothes and shoes in closets. With that in mind, the following four tips should help you in your quest to organize your closet so that you will actually find the extra space that you never knew existed. Coming up with this extra space is all part of an overall home storage organization plan.
Closet Storage Organization Tips
Storage Containers>
Have you seen all the various storage containers available today? Those containers that only the professional organizers were able to get a hold of in the past are now available at most home improvement stores at very reasonable prices. But don’t run out and buy a bunch of storage containers thinking that they will solve your problems. Before you do that, do yourself a favor and to through you closets and weed out anything you no longer use or have a need for. A great rule of thumb is that if you’ve not used something for 6 months, get rid of it! After dumping what you don’t need, measure the closet so that you are sure any storage containers that you buy will fit in the space you have.
Additional Shelving
Additional shelving can go a long way in helping you improve your closet storage problem. There are so many options with closet shelving, you’ll have no problem coming up with something that not only fits in your closet, but in a style that you are happy with as well. The ever popular plastic shelving units that also provide a place to hang your clothes from is one way to go. Another is to have wooden shelves made and installed, or to buy pre made wooden shelving that mounts on rails and clips you install in the closet. Once again, measuring your closet is of utmost importance before making a purchase. On the high end, you can go with a complete wire or wooden closet system. You can get creative and build your own if so inclined. Without question, shelving of any kind can go a long way in helping you get that extra closet storage space that you need to get organized. Again, this is just another component in overall home storage organization.
Hangers
If you’ve brought in storage containers and have installed additional shelving, but still can’t seem to find the space you need to hang all of your clothes up, you may want to look into the special space saving hangers. Once only available on those late night TV program,s these are commonplace in many mass retailers these days. These hangers are really quite ingenious. They are set up in a cascading way so that you are able to hang 4-5 pieces of clothing on one hanger. Most will hold up to 20 pounds, so you really won’t have any fear of overloading them.
Saving Shelf Space
Want a way to pick up all sorts of shelf space? Get all of those shorts, scarves, PJs, ties, swim suits, skirts and even lingerie off of the shelves and onto hangers! Quilt hangers are great for this. Or, using the hangers discussed above, put 4-5 items on the same hanger. After completing this exercise, you could pick up so much shelf space that you’ll have to go out and buy more things to fill it up again! The bottom line with closet storage is that with a little time spent on organization, you’ll be able to reclaim your closet and find that extra space you need to get everything put in its place.
